Μεγάλες πυρκαγιές βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη στο βόρειο τμήμα της Πολιτείας της Καλιφόρνιας, κυρίως στις κομητείες Νάπα και Σονόμα, με τις τοπικές αρχές να κάνουν λόγο για δέκα νεκρούς και να ανακοινώνουν την απομάκρυνση χιλιάδων πολιτών από τις εστίες τους.

Οι άνεμοι ταχύτητας 80 και πλέον χιλιομέτρων την ώρα βόρεια του κόλπου του Σαν Φρανσίσκο εξάπλωσαν τη φωτιά σε διάφορα μέτωπα και «αυτή τη στιγμή που μιλάμε, πάνω από 14 πολύ μεγάλες φωτιές καίνε σε οκτώ κομητείες», τόνισε ο Κεν Πίμλοτ, επικεφαλής της καλιφορνέζικης υπηρεσίας δασών και πυροπροστασίας, κατά τη διάρκεια μιας συνέντευξης Τύπου που παραχώρησε στο Σακραμέντο, βορειοανατολικά του Σαν Φρανσίσκο.

Τουλάχιστον 1.500 οικήματα και επιχειρήσεις καταστράφηκαν από τις πυρκαγιές, σύμφωνα με την πυροσβεστική.

Όπως κατέγραψαν πλάνα που μετέδωσαν τοπικοί τηλεοπτικοί σταθμοί, ξενοδοχειακά συγκροτήματα στην περιοχή επίσης υπέστησαν καταστροφές από τις πυρκαγιές.
